Member Profile : Tim Kenworthy – Useful Inc.
Who are you and what are you doing?
I am a full time human being. I also am the Founder and Childlike Enthusiasm Officer (CEO) of Useful Inc. We’re a non-profit social enterprise that exists to make doing good as mainstream as cheeseburgers and breathing.
To this end we run two initiatives:
1. Big Help Mob, a huge mob of ordinary people who combine their powers to perform extraordinary voluntary feats for people and organisations who need help (It’s sort of like a volunteer rent-a-crowd, or a flash mob, but useful).
2. Useful Sessions (formerly TEDxPerth), an idea-sharing event for like-minded people who want to be Useful to others and the planet, to watch inspiring talks about what’s possible and meet others who are walking their talk.
What can you give to this community?
Public Speaking + Presentation help
Feedback of written stuff (I like finding spelling errors and stuff)
Cardboard cubby-building skills
Lego-building skills
Crustaceans
Why did you start your project / organisation?
We aren’t a “problem solving” organisation. We grow what’s good. We don’t “fix what sucks”. We think that having millions more people asking themselves “how can I be useful to others or the planet?” is a good thing so we want to grow more of it. Our work will be done when a deep desire to do good things for others and the planet is a fundamental part of most people’s identities, and when that desire is actually lived in some way by most people. That’s what we mean by “doing good being as mainstream as cheeseburgers and breathing”.
To be honest what I really care about is spiritual growth.
I want to learn how to be more consistently loving and how to be of the most possible help to others and the world.
How do people contact you?
I had Twitter but it got too distracting so I turned it off. Just send me a good old email and I’ll likely ignore it for a while.
Where can we see your work in action?
useful.org.au
bighelpmob.org
usefulsessions.org (coming soon)
We’re also on Facebook and Twitter but we’re pretty rubbish at social media at this point.
