10:00 am Rapid Prototyping

Rapid prototyping is the process of quickly mockingup early draft versions of a product. A good prototype keeps the complexity out and allows you to receive feedback early on.

11:15 am How to Build a Mobile App

Whether you’re a business person responsible for figuring out your mobile strategy or a developer tasked with implementing it, this class will help you to understand the various options for building a mobile web app or website and how to choose between them. “Website or application?”, “jQuery mobile, jQ touch or Sencha touch?”, “Titanium or PhoneGap?”, “Generated or native?”, “How many devices to support?” are just some of the questions we’ll cover. If you need a mobile strategy, this class will help jump start the process of figuring out how to best add a mobile component to your web presence.

12:30 pm The Lean Startup Applied

You’re probably heard about the benefits that startups are getting from a lean methodology. Replacing long product development cycles with quick, iterative feedback to build better businesses more quickly and cost effectively. But I still find that most entrepreneurs don’t fully understand just how quickly it is possible to prototype and learn about their businesses. In this session we’ll provide detailed, practical tools you can use to “stop building and start learning” for your business.

1:30 pm A Practical Introduction to Web Development

Take a projectbased approach to HTML & CSS. By distinguishing good code from bad, participants will focus on learning a subset of the good parts in order to make something quick and awesome. Tackle the barebones of how to quickly develop a web site, and get it live on the web.

2:45 pm Up and Running Domains, Web Hosting and FTP

You’ve taken a few HTML or CSS classes and you’re thinking: now what? How do I get this stuff up on the Web? We’re here to help. This livestream will guide you through the steps to setting up a domain and hosting for the first time. We’ll review some best practices and upload our files to the server using an FTP client so that we can get your site live!

4:00 pm Making Something People Love

Join renowned entrepreneur and Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian as we think about unique ways to connect with your customers and to build a community of users who want your business to succeed. In this class, you’ll learn some key branding, marketing, and user experience principles, plus specific tactics and strategies that you can use to create a company people love.

5:00 pm Drinks

Thanks to Atmosphere Industries, Spacecubed is excited to play host to WA’s first Community Games workshop!

July 11 & 12, 2103
Spacecubed
45 St Georges Terrace
Perth, 6000
Online registration: http://communitygames.brownpapertickets.com
(spots are limited, so reserve your space now to avoid missing out)

Aimed at non-profits, community groups, educators and anyone else involved in change-making and community building, this two day hands on workshop teaches the nuts and bolts of community game design — that is, games that take place in the physical world, in our parks, streets and neighbourhoods. Community games are part of a growing global movement, and are sometimes called big games, urban games or pervasive games. At the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a game prototype which they can further develop and deploy in consultation with their communities or organisations.

Through the development of this prototype, participants will learn, through direct, hands-on experience:

• The basics of game design, which can be broadly applied in the creation of video games, online games, board games etc.
• Best practices for game creation for education, community engagement and social change
• Techniques for rapid prototyping, testing and improving your games
• Strategies for co-creating games with a variety of stakeholders

My Calico is co-founded by Kevin and Jack Owens, A father and son team with experience in the gym industry, marketing and web/app development. Kevin is the hustler.. Jack is the hacker.

What do you want to get from this community?

I want to meet like-minded techies and entrepreneurs and learn better ways to develop cool stuff in Perth!

What can you give to this community?

Work with like-minded techies and entrepreneurs to share the stuff that made it easier, and tougher for us to develop cool stuff in Perth. And hopefully help others along the journey.

Why did you start your project?

“Calico (CALories In Calories Out) is a digital media solution designed to engage people and help them become fitter. It includes ‘Burn&Earn’ the free app that makes a potential chore more fun with personalised GPS fitness programs and gamification that rewards them for being active with discounts from local and online businesses.

The focus isn’t the long term goal of weight loss or fitness, which can be intimidating or easy to put off. But ‘what do I get now if I go for a walk’?. Which helps build the small steps that leads to healthy long term behaviour change “

What is your passion?

We want to produce a long term community health promotion that is financially self sufficient without support from the public purse, and makes a difference to peoples lives. (No pressure then!)
